Trump Criticizes Biden, Acknowledges Challenges in Resolving Ukraine Crisis: Insights Echoed by Dr. Youssef Last Month

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has acknowledged the complexity of resolving the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, suggesting that the Biden administration has escalated tensions in Ukraine. Trump accused President Joe Biden of authorizing Kyiv to target deep within Russian territory using long-range American weapons without consulting him, just weeks before his expected inauguration on January 20, 2025.
Speaking at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on December 16, 2024, Trump labeled Biden’s decision as “reckless” and “poorly thought-out,” expressing frustration over not being consulted. “I don’t think that should have been allowed, not when there’s a possibility — certainly not just weeks before I take over. I might (reverse it). I think it was a very stupid thing to do.” Trump said.[i]
Acknowledging the challenges of the conflict, Trump remarked, “The situation between Russia and Ukraine is highly complex and demands a different approach.”
Trump’s remarks align with a November 20, 2024, article by Dr. Mohammed Walid Youssef, director of ICGER. In the piece titled “Putin Ushers in a New Nuclear Age,” Dr. Youssef argued that Biden’s administration, along with NATO allies, aimed to sabotage Trump’s forthcoming plans to halt the Ukraine war. The article suggested that decisions like these could portray Trump’s potential withdrawal of military aid as a sign of American weakness.
In his article, Dr. Youssef predicted that, after losing the November 2024 elections to Trump and the Republican right, liberal elites in the U.S. would attempt to escalate the Ukraine war in coordination with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He warned that this could lead to a nuclear confrontation before Trump assumes office.
Dr. Youssef also suggested that these elites are deliberately creating irreversible conditions on the battlefield by authorizing Kyiv to strike Russian targets, including major cities and critical infrastructure. He posited that such moves could provoke a nuclear response under Russia’s revised military doctrine.
Dr. Youssef concluded that the Biden administration and its NATO allies aim to thwart Trump’s anticipated strategy of halting military aid to Ukraine and negotiating peace with Russia. By intensifying the conflict during Biden’s remaining time in office, they seek to force Trump into continuing military support for Ukraine, painting any alternative as a sign of American defeat.
