As Predicted, “Alternative for Germany” Party Finishes Second in German Elections

The far-right “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) party finished second behind the conservative alliance of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) in Germany’s parliamentary elections held on Sunday, February 23, 2025.

According to exit polls broadcast by ARD and ZDF, the conservative CDU/CSU alliance secured between 28.5% and 29% of the vote, while the AfD garnered an unprecedented share of 19.5 to 20% of the vote, coming in second place.

These results closely align with predictions made by Dr. Youssef, president of ICGER, in the center’s annual geopolitical report. In his outlook for Europe in 2025, Dr. Youssef predicted, “Significant chaos will sweep the European Union due to various factors, notably the rise of far-right parties across numerous European nations. These parties will increasingly contest parliamentary and local elections, securing victories and emerging as significant political powers.” Dr. Youssef had specifically forecasted: “The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is expected to become the second-largest political force after the Christian Democratic Union, securing 17-21% of the vote at the federal level in 2025.”

Dr. Youssef pointed at the end of the report to the balance and division between the right and the left, saying: “This division will remain within American societies until one side gains decisive control. Current trends suggest a future tilt toward the right, with right-wing parties increasingly dominating governments in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. In the Middle East and Asia, Islamic parties hold power in many countries, while right-wing conservative parties, like India’s Bharatiya Janata Party led by Narendra Modi, dominate in India, Bhutan, and other nations.”
